More ND Grads Head to Med School
More ND Grads Head to Med School
Medical school admissions rates have never looked better than they did for the Notre Dame Class of 2009. More than 80 percent of students who applied were accepted into medical school, one of the highest acceptance rates of any university in the nation.
Many 2009 graduates were not only accepted into more than one school, but they also were accepted in more top-10 schools. In fact, Rev. James Foster, C.S.C., M.D., director of Notre Dame’s Center for Health Sciences Advising, says at least one ND student was accepted into each of the top-10 schools.
According to the U.S. News & World Report ranking of graduate schools, the top-medical schools, in order of research ranking, are Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania, Washington University St. Louis, University of California San Francisco, University of Washington, Stanford University, Duke University, Yale University, and tying for tenth place, Baylor College of Medicine and Columbia University. When ranked by primary care score, schools such as the University of Washington and the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill rose to the top.
All of Notre Dame’s best students were accepted into multiple medical schools. Brennan Bollman, the 2009 valedictorian, was accepted into 10 schools including Harvard University, Washington University Saint Louis, and Johns Hopkins University. Katie Kerr ’09 also was accepted into 10 schools. Chrissy Hall ’09 received acceptances from eight schools. Reid Merryman ’09 was accepted into 11 schools, including Harvard University, Washington University St. Louis, and Johns Hopkins University. Bollman, Merryman, and David Nemer ’09, now attend the Harvard University School of Medicine.
Foster is excited about the progress the Center for Health Sciences Advising has made in accomplishing its strategic goal of increasing the overall medical school acceptance rate of students, increasing the total number of students accepted to top schools, increasing the number of scholarships, and increasing the number of students accepted at more than one school.
