ND Perspectives, a seminar series featuring faculty and alumni, premiered to a packed house at Washington Hall during Reunion 2009. And now, videos of both panel discussions are available for viewing online.
The topics of the series, “The First 100 Days: What’s Next?” and “The Economic Crisis: Its Causes and Its Cures” were chosen due to their importance and relevance to the Notre Dame audience. The panels were followed by periods of open discussion.
“The First 100 Days” was moderated by Professor Matt Storin ’64, an adjunct professor in the Department of American Studies. First to speak was Gregory Crawford, dean of the College of Science. He was followed by R. Scott Appleby ’78, director of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and professor in the Department of History. The last two speakers were Christina Wolbrecht, associate professor in the Department of Political Science, and Mark Shields ’59, news columnist and political commentator. View the video.
The second session, addressing the economic crisis, was moderated by Scott Malpass ’84, vice president and chief investment officer for the University. The panelists were Margaret Foster and Joe Holt of the Mendoza College of Business, and Richard Jensen and Michael Pries ’93 of the Department of Economics and Econometrics. View the video.
Discussion after the panels included both questions and suggestions about the complex issues. Jensen, in particular, outlined the specific role of the University as an educational center when he said that the Notre Dame was responsible for training the next generation of business leaders who will be part of the recovery in the years to come.
