ND Ranked 18th Best College 
   Notre Dame has moved up one spot to No. 18 on the latest U.S. News and World Report ranking of the nation's best colleges. Harvard University, Princeton University, and Yale University earned the top three spots on the report. Notre Dame shares its 18th place ranking with two other universities—Emory University and Vanderbilt University. The 2008 list marks the second consecutive year that the University has moved up in the annual ranking. In 2007 Notre Dame held the No. 19 spot alongside Vanderbilt, and in 2006, the University was ranked 20th in the country.  [Full Story]

With the 121st Irish football season underway, thousands of Notre Dame fans are flocking to the Notre Dame campus to engage in traditional game-day activities—some of which have been passed down for generations. Alumni Spotlight
   The Notre Dame Alumni Association presented three awards during ceremonies on campus in September.  
   Percy A. Pierre ’61, ’63 M.S.E.E., University Trustee and former Michigan State University vice president, received the Rev. John J. Cavanaugh, C.S.C., Award honoring distinguished public service presented Sept. 4.
   Carolyn Manning ’87, founder of the Welcome to America project in Phoenix, received the Family Exemplar Award recognizing distinguished community service Sept. 4.
   Bryant Young94, a former Irish and professional football player, received the Harvey G. Foster Award during a halftime ceremony at the Notre Dame-San Diego State game Sept. 6. [Full Story]

ND Victory March Celebrates 100th Birthday
   The “greatest of all university fight songs,” the Notre Dame Victory March, will turn 100 years old this year and the Band of the Fighting Irish will not miss a beat in the centennial birthday celebration.
   The band’s 163rd year—and Notre Dame’s 121st football season—began August 21 with the traditional march around campus. That’s when freshmen hopefuls began the audition process to become members of the Band of the Fighting Irish. [Full Story]

Making a Difference
   Last year, Notre Dame clubs awarded 140 scholarships, providing more than $2.65 million in financial assistance to 1,211 students. The Notre Dame Club of Chicago provided more than $190,000 in scholarship funds, and Alison Schilling ’10 was one of the 59 students to benefit. [Full Story]

Student Business Etiquette Dinner
   The Notre Dame Alumni Association, in conjunction with the Career Center and the Alumni Student Club, will host the second annual Business Etiquette Dinner on Thurs., Oct. 2. Students are invited to join alumni and professional business etiquette coach Maureen Costello, principal of Image Launch, for this four-course meal that will condition budding business people to handle proper dining with ease and class. Hands & Hope for Haiti 
   This fall, ND alumni and current students will join together to collect 25,000 pounds of clothing for the people of Haiti. The Hands & Hope for Haiti clothing drive will take place on campus from Oct. 4 until the ND-Pittsburgh football game (Nov. 1). From campus, the donated clothing will be transported to Youngstown, Ohio, where it will be loaded onto a C130 cargo jet for delivery by the U.S. Air Force. [Full Story]

ND Celebrates 60 Years of Black Student-Athletes
   Notre Dame’s 2008 season-opening football game Sept. 6 kicked off a year-long program entitled “Celebrating Over 60 Years of Success by Black Student-Athletes at Notre Dame” that will recognize the historical contributions of African-American student-athletes at the University. Wayne Edmonds ’56, the first black football player to win a monogram while competing for the Irish, and Paul Thompson, son of Frazier Thompson ’47, former Irish track standout who was the first black monogram-winner in any sport at Notre Dame, presented the flag prior to the Notre Dame-San Diego State contest.
