Five Questions with Daniel Lende
In this issue of ND Today, meet Daniel Lende, winner of this year’s Rodney F. Ganey Ph.D. Faculty Community Based Research Award. Assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology, and fellow with the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, Lende developed the “Researching Disease: Methods in Medical Anthropology” course with a grant from the Notre Dame Center for Social Concerns. Celebrate Teaching Excellence
This fall, Notre Dame will welcome K-12 educators from all around the country to the 16th annual Excellence in Teaching Conference. This year's conference takes place Oct. 9-11, and will focus on the individuality of children. The keynote speaker at this year’s conference will be Professor Dennis Jacobs, Notre Dame vice president and associate provost. The workshops will be presented by Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D., an award- winning author and speaker with more than 30 years of teaching experience from the primary through the doctoral level. Two New Tools for Job Searching
With the launch of ONWARD: Alumni Career Development, the Alumni Association made a commitment to help alumni navigate their career paths. And now it has added two new elements to the ONWARD arsenal: career seminars co-hosted by local ND clubs, and a series of four online webinars. [Full Story]

Call for Alumni Board of Director Nominations
The Alumni Association is asking your assistance in identifying candidates to run for election to the Alumni Association Board of Directors. The nomination committee of the Alumni Board will review nominations for six regional directors and one Young Alumni director and will select two candidates for each position for the 2010 ballot. The election will take place Jan. 11, 2010-Feb. 25, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. EST. [Full Story]

An Eye-opening Summer Experience
Prospective students often say they fall in love with Notre Dame at first sight. But for some students it isn’t a campus tour that draws them in, it’s the opportunity to participate in the University’s Summer Scholars program, a two-week intensive course for rising high school seniors. This is precisely the experience that a group of Notre Dame alumni in Pennsylvania—with assistance from a group called the Connelly Foundation—are making possible for students in Philadelphia. New Hannah Storm Journalism Intern Named
Joshua Flynt, who will be a junior this fall, was recently selected as the Alumni Association’s 2009-2010 Hannah Storm Journalism Intern. Flynt, who is from Malta, N.Y., is an English major who has been actively involved in journalism as a writer for Scholastic. He also writes for the University’s Sports Information Department. This fall, Flynt will work closely with the alumni editor to write articles for various alumni communications, including ND Today. [Full Story]

Healing in Honduras
When Dr. Peter Daly ’82 first met Angela in 2003, she was a nine year old with severely deformed legs. A “pequeño,” or “small one” at the Rancho Santa Fe in Honduras, she is one of the nearly 3,300 children currently adopted by Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos International (NPH), a Christian mission that provides a permanent family and home for orphaned children living in conditions of extreme poverty. This spring, Dr. Daly and his wife opened the doors to the new Holy Family Surgery Center (HFSC), a unique facility that performs mainly orthopedic surgeries for children like Angela. [Full Story]
